Reading Time: 2 minutes

Welcome back to Winston’s Words of Wisdom, and my new reading recommendation: Atomic Habits.

I am very glad to be back after an extended period of being on Furlough. I’m sure we’ll have a period of great reflection towards the end of this year, but what a crazy year it has been, so I am at least glad to be back in the saddle again.

Naturally, while on furlough, I learnt 3 new languages, mastered 2 musical instruments and perfected knitting… In truth, I put on a few pounds and have become mildly addicted to Instagram, but the intention was there…

Atomic Habits by James Clear

On that note, I did read a book recently which may help turn some of those goals into a reality. James Clear’s book Atomic Habits is a sensational read!

Have you ever really wanted to get in shape, work harder, learn new things but seem to fall at the first hurdle?

James Clear explains his own story of coming back from a major accident, and the tiny habits and processes he put in place to not just get back to where he was, but go further than he had ever hoped.

It’s not about massive change or effort, simply about improving tiny things every day to form more positive habits.

Here’s an excerpt from the book to give you an idea;

Identity-Based Habits: How to Actually Stick to Your Goals This Year

The key to building lasting habits is focusing on creating a new identity first. Your current behaviors are simply a reflection of your current identity. What you do now is a mirror image of the type of person you believe that you are (either consciously or subconsciously).

To change your behavior for good, you need to start believing new things about yourself. You need to build identity-based habits.

Imagine how we typically set goals. We might start by saying “I want to lose weight” or “I want to get stronger.” If you’re lucky, someone might say, “That’s great, but you should be more specific.”

So then you say, “I want to lose 20 pounds” or “I want to squat 300 pounds.”

These goals are centered around outcomes, not identity.

Want to lose weight?

Identity: Become the type of person who moves more every day.

Small win: Buy a pedometer. Walk 50 steps when you get home from work. Tomorrow, walk 100 steps. The day after that, 150 steps. If you do this 5 days per week and add 50 steps each day, then by the end of the year, you’ll be walking over 10,000 steps per day.

Upping productivity

As I am working from home a lot more and suspect that will stick for the long term, re-learning how to do my job effectively. This book was a huge help to upping my productivity and getting things back on track.

If you have nagging goals you haven’t achieved, or you simply want to get better at what you do, this is essential reading for you.
