Extreme Ownership | Winston’s Words of Wisdom

Watching you folk, as I do, it is always interesting to see your reactions to things. (I say watch, more look longingly occasionally between naps).
By way of example, this week, I may, or may not, have chewed up one of the girls favourite dolls…
In my defence, if you are going to leave a plastic thing, which is the perfect thing for a good chew, don’t come crying to me when it duly gets chewed. That said, I did take responsibility for my actions, with a lowered head, much contrition, and after a bit of time passing, I was forgiven.
The lesson here is twofold, I took responsibility for my part, as did said young girl. Had she tidied her toys away it wouldn’t have happened. Lessons learned on both sides.
While this is a relatively trite example, how often do we truly take responsibility for our actions?
I have noticed the older humans get, the less ‘bad’ things become their fault. It is someone’s else fault, the situation was against them, the odds were never stacked in their favour, and so on.
Admittedly as we go through life it does get more complicated. ‘Right and wrong’ soon become a matter of perspective, but do you ever really, truly, pause to think – what could I have done differently to get a better outcome?
Extreme Ownership
This topic is discussed at great length by some former Navy Seals in the book Extreme Ownership. If you can get past the ‘American, *heck yeah’ style (fans of the Team American film will note the subtle change of word there) some real wisdom live in these pages.
If we all took complete responsibility for our actions as a starting point would the world be a better place? I suggest it would.
Happy reading.
