The Madness of Crowds | Winston’s Words of Wisdom

I have been watching the news a bit more this week, to try and make sense of what you Humans do. I must admit, it has been hard going… That was until I saw a very engaging Labrador holding a press conference as there seems to be a big row with ‘the North’ at the moment.

I did think that was odd, until it was explained to me that it wasn’t a Labrador at all, but in fact your Prime Minister, which you all voted for with your own free will (that election stuff was mainly lost on me as well. You seemed to have a ‘choice’ between a crazy old man who wanted to give everything away, and a crazy younger guy who wanted to ‘Get Brexit Done’, whatever the hell that is… if of course you deem that a ‘choice’).

Madness of Crowds

Anyway, all this confusion led me back into a good book to make sense of it all and I found the excellent Madness of Crowds by Douglas Murray.

It’s fair to say this isn’t for the faint hearted, or should I say easily offended. Indeed, should I even refer to you as Hu’mans’ or should be it be Hu’persons’ or any other less gender loaded pronoun. He does go in rather hard on issues such as Gender, Race and Identity and that is much the point of the book I feel. Why can’t these things be debated in a heated fashion without descending into a visceral hate campaign against the ‘other’.

Quite an eye opener for me, as not a lot of human (sorry, did it again) behaviour makes much sense to me, and in truth, this may have even confused me further! As if the examples in the book are true, and I see no reason why they aren’t, you guys are even crazier than I had first thought! However, in keeping with the tone Douglas strikes at the end of the book, I am sure there is hope, and with greater understanding, tolerance and love for one another, you guys may just get there one day.

Happy reading.

An extract from the Goodreads website:

The challenging and brilliantly-argued new book from the bestselling author of The Strange Death of Europe.

In his devastating new book The Madness of Crowds, Douglas Murray examines the twenty-first century’s most divisive issues: sexuality, gender, technology and race. He reveals the astonishing new culture wars playing out in our workplaces, universities, schools and homes in the names of social justice, identity politics and intersectionality.

We are living through a postmodern era in which the grand narratives of religion and political ideology have collapsed. In their place have emerged a crusading desire to right perceived wrongs and a weaponization of identity, both accelerated by the new forms of social and news media. Narrow sets of interests now dominate the agenda as society becomes more and more tribal–and, as Murray shows, the casualties are mounting.

Readers of all political persuasions cannot afford to ignore Murray’s masterfully argued and fiercely provocative book, in which he seeks to inject some sense into the discussion around this generation’s most complicated issues. He ends with an impassioned call for free speech, shared common values and sanity in an age of mass hysteria.
